I have no one to talk to: what you can do right now
If you’re in danger or thinking about ending your life, use the crisis options above first. If you’re safe but have no one to talk to, you can still talk to someone tonight: a peer-run warmline, a trained listener, or someone you already know. Over the next few weeks, the aim is more than one name to call.
Key takeaways
- If you’re in crisis, the crisis options at the top of this page are for you. If you mostly need someone to talk to, peer warmlines and listener services are another way in.
- One message to someone you already know — an old classmate, a cousin, a coworker you like — can be enough for tonight. You don’t have to explain everything.
- Having no one to talk to right now describes where you are, not who you are, and it can change one person at a time.
If you need help now
If you are in the US and having thoughts of suicide or self-harm, or need crisis support, call or text 988 or use 988 online chat. For an immediate life-threatening emergency, call 911. Outside the US, contact your local emergency or crisis service. Coaching, venting and a therapy waitlist are not emergency services.

A peer-run warmline. Volunteers who are in recovery themselves answer and offer emotional support. Find the line for your state, and its hours, in NAMI’s warmline directory. Most only take calls from their own state or county, so check before you call one somewhere else.
The NAMI HelpLine, on weekdays. Free and confidential one-on-one emotional support, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Eastern, Monday to Friday, except federal holidays. Call 1-800-950-NAMI (6264) or text “NAMI” to 62640. It isn’t a crisis line.
A text line at any hour. On its loneliness page, Crisis Text Line asks you to text CONNECT to 741741 for “free, confidential support from a trained volunteer Crisis Counselor, available 24/7.” You can also chat on its website.
A trained listener online. 7 Cups has free chat with trained volunteer listeners. On Ventoutt, anonymous venting with trained listeners is there too.
Someone you already know. Not a best friend — anyone you’d be glad to hear from: a cousin, a former roommate, the coworker you get along with. The next section has words for it.
Each service above was checked on its own page on October 17, 2026.

What if there’s honestly no one you could message?

Then start with a warmline or a listener tonight, and let that be enough for now. Talking to a stranger who’s there for exactly this isn’t a lesser option; it’s a place to put the words while you build the rest. If you’ve been talking to an AI chatbot because there’s nobody else, there’s a short, no-judgment section on that in the main loneliness guide.

How do you get to having someone to talk to?
Tonight is about getting through tonight. Over the coming weeks, it’s about more than one name you could call:
More questions about having no one to talk to?
Is it normal to feel like you have no one to talk to?
It can happen at any stage of life: after a move, a breakup, a falling-out, or a busy stretch where everyone drifted. It says something about your situation right now. It doesn’t mean something is wrong with you.
Who can I talk to about my feelings for free?
The NAMI HelpLine (weekdays) and 7 Cups’ volunteer listeners are free, by their own pages. Peer warmlines offer emotional support too; check your state’s line for its hours. In a crisis, use the crisis options at the top of this page.
Is it okay to talk to AI when I have no one?
There’s nothing to be ashamed of. The main loneliness guide has a short section on what a chatbot can and can’t be for you.
What if I have people, but I can’t talk to them?
That’s a different kind of loneliness, and it has its own guide: being lonely around people you know.
