The World Health Organization describes burnout as "a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed," and adds that "It is not classified as a medical condition." (WHO, 28 May 2019)
Look at the cause in that sentence: work stress that hasn't been managed. A weekend, a vacation or a day off gives you a break from it. If you come back to the same week, the same week starts working on you again. So recovery has two halves: rest outside work, and change inside it.
This page assumes you're still in the job. If you're not sure burnout is the right word for what's happening, start with is it burnout, or a hard stretch?. If it's a different kind of work stress, the guide to work stress maps them all. If it's everyday stress rather than burnout, how to deal with work stress has the day-to-day tools.
