A layoff, a firing or an offer withdrawn before your start date can leave you dealing with money, coverage and the shock at the same time.
It also takes a toll that's worth taking seriously. A 2009 review pooled 237 cross-sectional and 87 longitudinal studies and found that 34% of unemployed people had psychological problems, against 16% of people in work. The longitudinal studies and natural experiments pointed to job loss itself causing some of that distress, rather than only people who were already struggling losing jobs (Paul & Moser, 2009). These are averages across studies, not a prediction for you, but they're a reason not to treat a hard few weeks as a personal failing.
