You can't make a difficult boss change, but you can choose what you respond to and how. Name one specific behavior rather than the person, keep short dated notes, and plan one calm conversation with a single request. First, one question: Is anyone at work — a manager, a coworker or a customer — threatening you, harassing you, or making you afraid to be there?
A difficult boss isn't one type of person. It's a set of behaviors you run into week after week, such as:
Moods that decide the shift. You read their face in the first five minutes to work out what kind of day it's going to be.
Criticism that never says what good looks like. You hear what's wrong, sometimes in front of the team, and never what would be right.
Plans that change without warning. The schedule, the priority or the deadline moves, and you're the last to know.
Questions that go unanswered. You ask, hear nothing, guess, and get blamed for guessing.
Being watched every minute. Breaks, messages and half-finished tasks all get checked, and nothing is left to you.
Credit going up, blame coming down. Good results become theirs; problems become yours.
Your manager decides a lot of your working life: your hours, your tasks, and what the people above them hear about you. That's why one person's behavior can shape your whole week. A 2013 review that pooled 57 studies found that destructive leadership, the researchers' term for harmful behavior from a leader, went with lower well-being among the people who reported to that leader, and with more of them wanting to leave (Schyns & Schilling, 2013). These are correlations. They show the two go together, not that the manager alone caused it, and they can't predict how your job will go. They are a reason not to dismiss what you're feeling as being too sensitive.
It can feel personal, and sometimes it is. Three questions help you see it more clearly:
Is it only you? Watch how they treat the people around you for a week. If everyone gets the same short replies, it says more about them than about you.
What changed, and when? A new target, a new boss above them, or a mistake nobody has talked about can all shift how a manager acts.
What would you notice if they didn't dislike you? If you can name it, you have something specific to ask for. If you can't, the feeling may be coming from the stress as much as from them.
If it's only you, and it started after you made a complaint, reported a problem or asked for an accommodation, or it's aimed at who you are, such as your race, gender, religion, age or a disability, that's a question for work stress, or something unsafe?. If the criticism has you doubting whether you're good at the job, self-doubt at work is the better guide.
Not their personality. But each thing that's out of your hands sits next to something you can work with:

Yes, short ones. Notes show whether it's a pattern or a bad week, give you specific examples for a conversation, and mean you don't have to rely on memory if things get worse. Four columns are enough:

These rows are invented examples. Write yours the same day, on paper or your own phone rather than a work device or account. Stick to what happened, not what you think it means: "raised her voice and said X in front of two customers" will be more useful later than "was horrible to me". Use the print link for a blank copy.

One conversation, about one thing, with one request. Ask for ten minutes at a quiet time, in person or on a call, not by text late at night. Then plan four parts:

Gives them a reason that's theirs as well as yours

What you'll do next
Decided before you go in, whatever they say
Yes: confirm it in a short message. No: ask what they'd suggest instead. Nothing changes: keep the notes going and set a date to reread them.
Afterwards, send a short message so you both have the same version: "Thanks for talking today. Just so we're on the same page: if something's off with my work, you'll let me know what and what you'd like instead, one-to-one." It's polite, and it's a dated record of what you agreed.
If you're new, or this is your first job, you're still allowed to ask. A specific, polite request from the newest person on the team is a reasonable request.
Then you still have options, and you can try more than one:
Take it to the next person. HR, or your manager's manager, with your notes and the request you already made. Your handbook or HR portal may say who to go to when your manager is the problem.
Change how you deal with them. Put questions and agreements in messages, keep face-to-face exchanges short, and ask for check-ins at a set time instead of whenever they appear.
Change what's around it. Ask whether a different shift, team or location is possible.
Set a review date. Pick a day to reread your notes. If nothing has changed, that tells you something about whether to stay, and career uncertainty helps you think that decision through.
If things got worse after you raised it, such as fewer hours, worse shifts or different duties, read what to do if you're afraid of what happens when you speak up.

A hard boss is stressful. It becomes something else when your manager threatens you, makes sexual comments or advances, singles you out for who you are, treats you worse after you speak up, or tells you to do work that could hurt you. Planning the conversation, and saying the first two sentences out loud before you need them
Going through your notes together to see what keeps repeating
Deciding what you'll do if nothing changes, and by when
Getting through the shift after a hard exchange without carrying it all evening

Check whether it's only you and what changed, then respond to the behavior rather than the feeling: one example, one request. If it started after you complained, or it's about who you are, go to the safety page.
Offer the updates before they ask. Agree on set times, such as midday and the end of your shift, and what each update will cover. Then ask which tasks you can finish without checking in.
If you've raised it with your manager and nothing changed, or you can't raise it with them safely, HR or your manager's manager is the next step. Bring your notes and the request you already made.
